Postgraduate Course Information

Postgraduate Diploma in Translation and Interpreting
This is a one year full-time, or two year part-time, course which focuses on the practical aspects of translation and interpreting. It consists of four compulsory papers:

Paper 1: Professional Practice of Translation
Paper 2: Discourses of Translation and Interpreting A
Paper 3: Discourses of Translation and Interpreting B
Paper 4: Methodology of Translation

Honours in Translation
This is similar to the Postgraduate Diploma but includes additional theoretical components in the second semester and a Research Essay. There are four compulsory papers in addition to the Research Essay.

Paper 1: Professional Practice of Translation
Paper 2: Discourses of Translation and Interpreting A
Paper 3: Discourses of Translation and Interpreting B
Paper 4: Translation Studies

Masters in Translation
This degree involves two years of full-time study or three to four years part-time study. The first year of study is similar to the Honours programme and comprises the same four papers.

In the second year of study students consolidate their translation skills and are also introduced to further theoretical studies and research in the field. The course includes three compulsory papers plus a Research Report of approximately 25 000 words.

Paper 1: Practical translation practice
Paper 2: Translation and theories of communication
Paper 3: Research in translation studies.

Postgraduate Research
Research in the discipline is varied. For example, students may elect to conduct research in the translation of literature. This covers all genres of literature, such as contemporary, canonised, popular or children's literature, and many different approaches, such as descriptive, comparative, ethnographic, and historical. More empirical studies involve examining the practice of translation and/or interpreting in different contexts, the status of the translator, translation policy and related studies.
