Literary Theory

At the end of the nineties, back when technology was still supposed to save us all and make the world perfect and rich and all that silly stuff before the dot-com boom-crash, people used to say books were going to be obsolete. The same people would tell me that I could live anywhere because it's all on the Internet, which is equally untrue. I think one of the ways people have responded in the book business, is by making books that are more sensual, more tactile, more beautiful; more conscious about what a jewel box a book is, that nothing else quite can be. To contain the whole history of somebody's life in something that is six inches by nine inches by one inch is kind of astounding.
