Welcome to the School of Social Sciences—one of the most exciting places to study at Wits. With its outstanding lecturers, internationally recognized academic researchers and vigorous engagement in public debate, the School provides an optimal vantage point on a rapidly changing South African nation and African continent. The School brings together traditional academic disciplines with innovative interdisciplinary post-graduate research programmes. The Departments of Anthropology, History, International Relations, Philosophy, Political Studies and Sociology all offer undergraduate majors and post-graduate training through the Doctoral level. Programmes in Migration Studies, Development Studies, and Demography and Population Studies offer opportunities for students to pursue an Honours, MA and PhD through coursework and research. Our graduates find jobs in public service and in the private sector. They include leading figures in government, the trade union movement and development sectors as well as in the arts, journalism and academy.
Two international exchange programmes are hosted by the School. The International Human Rights Exchange, co-sponsored by Bard College in the USA offers a semester long concentration of courses in human rights to selected undergraduates in their second year of study. The Global Labour University, cosponsored by the Berlin School of Economics and the University of Kassel in Germany, as well as the State University of Campinas in Brazil, brings mid-career trade-unionists to Wits for a year-long Masters course.
The School also hosts five research institutes, centers and research units: Society, Work and Development Institute (SWOP); the Center for Ethics, the Center for African Migration Studies, the Center for African International Relations, and the History Research Group (long known as the “History Workshop”). Finally, under the rubric “Local Histories, Present Realities,” the new NRF Research Chair headed by Prof. Phillip Bonner, offers research opportunities at Honours, MA, PhD and Post-Doctoral level.
Above all, the mission of the School of Social Sciences is to provide tools and opportunities for critical thinking and social engagement. In seeking to realize that mission, the School brings a large number of distinguished visitors and post-doctoral fellows from around the world to campus annually, and hosts a wide range of conferences, symposia, seminar series, workshops and public debates. Explore what we have to offer and join us!
