The School of Geosciences is the largest and most diverse academic Earth Science institution in Africa.
The School enrolls 365 Undergraduate, 39 Honours, and 71 postgraduate students (April 2008), and has a range of analytical facilities. It holds a number of major fossil and mineral collections, with displays in two museums.
Education programmes are offered in numerous disciplines including geology, palaeontology, palaeoanthropology, geophysics, geochemistry, geochronology, environmental science, atmospheric science, hydrogeology, economic geology, and exploration and mining geoscience.
Wits Geoscience graduates are equipped for a variety of careers and are sought after in the mining and minerals industries (internationally), research institutes, government and in environmental organisations.
The School of Geosciences combines a rich teaching tradition with a strong research base. It is the main (and in some cases sole) centre of study in Africa for a number of fields, including palaeontology, palaeoanthropology and geophysics.
