| The Faculty's seven schools of
award sixteen undergraduate degrees and numerous postgraduate degrees.
The total student headcount (undergraduate and postgraduate) stands at over 3,500 with a continuous staff complement of 114 full-time and 19 part-time academic and over 100 support services staff and substantial number of sessional (industry experts) and honorary staff.
The 100-year history of Engineering at Wits is characterised by achievements and awards.
All our first degrees in engineering are fully accredited by the Engineering Council of South Africa under the Washington Accord. Our range of options has been increased to include information engineering and biomedical engineering (within Electrical Engineering), and environmental engineering (within Civil Engineering).
Degrees in the Built Environment address the social, spatial and infrastructural needs of a transforming South Africa. The delivery of affordable housing, the development of rural and urban environments, and meeting other social and physical challenges form the basis of the teaching, learning and research programmes.
The BSc (Construction Management) is accredited by the South African Institute of Building and the Chartered Institute of Building, UK (CIOB) .
The BSc (Quantity Surveying) is accredited by the South African Council for the Quantity Surveying Profession and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), UK .
The Bachelor of Architecture, and the Bachelor of Architectural Studies are accredited by the South African Council for the Architectural Professions, the Royal Institute of British Architects(RIBA) and the Commonwealth Association of Architects .
To assist learners from disadvantaged schooling backgrounds and those unable to adjust to the first year curriculum programme, the Faculty runs academic development programmes in each school in the built environment section and two academic development programmes (Special Programme and Extended Engineering Programme) in the engineering branch.
The Faculty maintains strong links with industry in the form of student bursaries, scholarships and internships, and has the highest number of endowed professorships or chairs in the University. Large numbers of contract research is conducted for local and international companies.
The Faculty also provides Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programmes and special courses tailored to meet the needs of practitioners.
